Asclepias tuberosa (Butterfly Weed), a bushy perennial appreciated for its spectacular clusters of bright orange to yellow-orange flowers that bloom consistently throughout summer, is simple to care for, drought tolerant, and deer resistant. The bright umbels, which are 2 to 5 inches across (5 to 12 cm), are atop upright flowering stems that are covered in stiff, lance-shaped leaves. In the fall, the umbels are followed by gorgeous seed pods. The thick foliage offers a deep-green background that harmonizes well with the cheery flat umbel flowers. This perennial wildflower, which is native to the majority of the United States and southern Canada, doesn't have milky sap like many other milkweeds do.
