Award-winning Monarda didyma x fistulosa 'Oneida' (Bee Balm), a clump-forming perennial with masses of brilliant scarlet blooms carried in dense, globular terminal heads, is a striking sight in the summer. Numerous butterflies and hummingbirds are drawn to them as they bloom for weeks from mid-summer to early fall. They are supported by a whorl of gorgeous chocolate bracts. The bright, fresh green leaves, which are deliciously fragrant and may be savored in salads or just by passing by, perfectly complement their striking hue. 'Oneida', widely regarded as the best red Monarda, has a markedly higher level of powdery mildew resistance than older types.
