Holly, Inkberry #1
Holly, Inkberry
Ilex glabra
Grows easily in average, medium to damp soils in full sun to partial shade. It is suitable for both light and heavy soils. Tolerates moist soil conditions. Prefers full sun, rich, regularly moist, acidic soils. However, it has good shade tolerance. Avoid soils that are neutral to alkaline. Inkberries are dioecious (male and female plants exist separately). Female plants require a male pollinator to produce the berry-like drupes that are unique to the species and cultivars. Shape the plant in early spring, just as new growth begins. Plants require little pruning unless used as a hedge (which is best grown as an informal hedge). If colonial spread is not desired, remove root suckers on a regular basis.
