The "Winter King" hawthorn is one of the best hawthorn cultivars for use in landscaping. It is a compact, hardy tree. Green hawthorn bears thorns like the cockspur hawthorn but grows to a height of 20 to 30 feet and has a rounded habit. This tree grows a broad round to pyramidal crown, persistent red fruits, and flaky bark in a variety of colors. It is utilized in the landscape as a specimen plant. After the leaves emerge in mid-May, white flowers start to bloom. In September, red fruits begin to ripen and last through the winter. Fall hues can range from deep red to purple. The 'Winter King' cultivar of the green hawthorn, a small decorative flowering tree, is advised for use. It is versatile and appropriate for planting in urban areas.
