'All Gold' Japanese Hakone Grass
Hakonechloa macra
The beautiful golden Hakonechloa macra 'All Gold' (Hakone Grass) practically gleams in the shadow. Bright foliage with beautifully arching, slender blades that tend to become chartreuse in the shade and pure gold in the sun makes a cascading mound on this plant. While maintaining its vivid color throughout the spring, summer, and fall, it begins to blush pink as fall approaches and eventually turns golden tan in the winter before withering and dying to the ground. Late summer brings up delicate-looking, reddish-brown flower spikes, but they are typically hidden beneath the leaves. Hakonechloa macra 'All Gold' is a truly beautiful plant for shady combinations because it is so flexible.
