The best soils for growing plants are those that are rich in organic matter, neutral to slightly acidic, medium in moisture, and well-drained, and that are either completely exposed to the sun or partially shaded. enjoys a root-zone mulch to keep the soil hydrated. A site shielded from strong winds is also appreciated, but stay away from warm southern exposures as these could encourage early bud opening in the spring. The fleshy root structure of this magnolia is easily destroyed during transplantation, therefore it is best to choose a landscape area carefully and leave it alone after it is planted. After flowering, prune as necessary. Other than removing dead or broken branches, trimming is typically not necessary.
